Staff Pick: Holosun HS407K X2

As an aging shooter who prefers red dots and slim everyday carry pistols, my options for red dots have been limited. While full-size pistol red dots have come a long way, it has taken a bit for the mini dots or micros to catch up. Until recently, my only options were dots like the SMS Sheild and the Sig Sauer Romeo Zero. While these dots were acceptable, they have a few significant issues. The first is the plastic housing, which feels flimsy. The second is the battery compartment. Having to remove the dot to change the battery is unacceptable, and given this is my primary defensive tool, it requires sighting in the dot again. Third, the illumination controls are either super unfriendly or non-existent.

Enter the Holosun HS407K X2. I love this dot. Before I get into it, here is what Holosun says about their red dot.

“The HS407K X2 is an open reflex optical sight designed for subcompact pistol applications. The HS407K X2 improves on the previous version by adding Lock Mode which was first introduced in our 2018 LEM pistol optic models. Lock Mode, when activated, locks the buttons preventing inadvertent setting changes.

Additional features include Holosun’s Red Super LED with up to 50k hour battery life, a crisp 6MOA dot, and Shake Awake. The durable housing is made from 7075 Aluminum, uses Holosun’s K footprint, and houses the 1632 battery in a side-mounted tray for easy replacement when needed. The HS407K X2 is a direct for P365X/XL, and requires an adapter plate for slides with a four-boss interface.”

Let's address my previous sighted grievances first. First, the Holosun HS407K X2 is made of aluminum. It feels robust and gives me confidence that it will be there if I ever need it. Second, the battery compartment is side-loading and accessed easily with a simple flat head. Third, the illumination control surfaces are readily available and useful.

Beyond my needs, this dot looks fantastic on my Sig Sauer X-Macro, a direct mount like the P365X/XL. The window is large enough for my purpose and presents a crisp dot that has always been there when I needed it (so far, no shots fired; I was just wondering what my dogs were barking at in the middle of the night).

There will be new and possibly better micro-red dots every year going forward. The market should be thick with them, given their popularity. The Holosun 407k X2 will go down as the first really useful option that meets the minimum needs of the EDC Shooter.
